November is a big month for awareness in the senior living world. It's Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month, National Diabetes Month, and even National Family Caregivers Month. Many of our residents and their families face challenges with one or more of these every day.

Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month

Every day, we see the impact of Alzheimer's and other dementias on our residents, their families, and even our staff. November is Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month. The Alzheimer's Association has created a special page on their website where anyone can go to honor a carefiver with a personal tribute. By visiting the organization's website, you can learn more about Alzheimer's and how people are supporting research to learn more about this disease.

Recently, the staff at our Palms of Punta Gorda location in Florida participated in an Alzheimer's Walk event (see photo above and at the bottom of this post).

Every day, the staff members at our communities help many of our residents manage varying stages of diabetes. We help families understand guidelines set in place by a resident's primary care physician and provide the best support we can--which can be extremely beneficial to a resident when a plan involved requires lifestyle changes. November is National Diabetes Month, and the National Diabetes Education Program provides beneficial resource material to people with diabetes, family and caregivers, health care professionals, and even the greater community.

National Family Caregivers Month

A senior living community such as one you would find in our family of communities has a lot of benefits for many families of seniors--especially those families that are having a hard time providing the best quality of care for an elderly loved one. However, we understand that most of the families that come to us looking for a safe and comfortable senior living community have experienced the caregiving role as well.

According to Caregiver Action Network, 37% of men and 40% of women can say they are family caregivers, and even 36% of younger Americans (18-29 years old) say they have been placed in a family caregiver role. We often speak to family members who have been the primary caregiver for a loved one, but now must consider transitioning care to an assisted living community or memory care center.

Do you have questions about the best caregiving options for your loved one? Contact us today and we will be happy to sit down and talk to you and even schedule a tour of one of our communities closest to you.

Get Involved

If you have a family member who is a resident at one of our communities, keep an eye out on their Facebook page for upcoming awareness events througout the year. We encourage you to ask how you can help! We love seeing the families of our residents, especially when there is a special event happening. Would you like to talk to your local community about creating an awareness event? Contact an Activities Director today to chat!

How are you advocating for awareness this month?
