The holiday season is often referred to as “the most wonderful time of the year”; it’s a time for togetherness, celebration, and love. However, this year, for many individuals, the holiday season may look different.

We know the impact that COVID-19 has had on businesses, families, and individuals. For this reason, we believe - now more than ever - it’s important to find ways to give back. Giving back to your community, even if it’s just in a small way, will not only positively impact those around you, it will positively impact yourself, as well. Senior Solutions Management Group encourages our residents and our communities to give back to others when they can. We’re sharing some (socially distant and safe!) ways you can give back this holiday season.

Find A Local Food Or Toy Drive

This is one of the easiest ways to give back to your community, holiday season or not! Local organizations will typically set up drives during the holidays—whether for food, toys for children, hygiene products, or school supplies. You can easily make a difference by donating toys, non-perishable food items, and other necessities to local families in need.

National organizations that participate in these drives are Toys for Tots, Salvation Army, and Feeding America, but look for others that may be local to your area!

Make a Donation in the Name of a Loved One

In place of (or in addition to) buying your family gifts this year, consider making donations in their names instead. Choose charities or organizations that have special meaning to your loved one. For example, animal lovers might appreciate a donation to a local animal shelter, and an environmentalist may value a contribution to a local farmer’s market or environmental society.

This can be a simple way to show your friends and family that you care about them and their interests, while also making a difference for the greater good.

Write Letters to Deployed Soldiers

Even though the holidays are about spending time with family, some people don’t get to do that. Deployed soldiers and military members often have to be away from their families and loved ones during the holidays. Because of this, a great way to give back is to send letters, cards, or care packages to our troops overseas.

Whether it’s a care package with snacks, games, or toiletries, or a simple card thanking them for their service, deployed military members will appreciate the kind thought.

You can send items and cards on your own, but since there are some guidelines and regulations, it may be easier to send cards through an organization. Operation Gratitude and Support Our Troops are great organizations that facilitate gathering and shipping care packages each year.

Knit or Crochet for Local Shelters

If you are creative or artistic, using your talents to give back to your community can be a simple yet thoughtful idea. If you are skilled at knitting or crocheting, but never know what to do with your finished items, consider donating them to those in need. Local and national shelters, churches, and hospitals are always in need of knitted items like hats, scarves, and blankets. Not only will you be putting your skills to fair use, but whoever receives your creation will know that it was handmade with love.

Here’s a list of some national organizations that are always in need of knitted items!

Start At Home

When people think of “giving back,” many people look to their local community, or even further into the world. Sometimes, though, you can give back right at home. Little acts of kindness can go a long way, especially during the holiday season. Bake cookies for your neighbors, send a card to an old friend you haven’t spoken to in a while, or share stories and old photos with your younger family members. These small actions can be significant and can spread joy during the holidays.

Make a Difference Today

Giving back to others, especially during the holiday season, can be a fulfilling and meaningful experience. Not only can you make a difference for those less fortunate, but you can also increase your own happiness and well-being.

2020 has been a challenging and trying year for many. It’s important to remember that while cookies and decorations are fun and festive, the true meaning of the holiday season is about being thankful for what you have, being with those you love, and helping others.
